Oil System Modification

Something I have been thinking about and thought I'd pose the question to the experts in here.

We all know keeping our stator cool is paramount to keeping it around and functioning like its supposed to. And, changing the oil frequently is one way to make sure it does stays cool. Has anyone considered adding an oil cooler to our bikes to help keep that temperature down? Is it even possible? I had an air cooled bike from the early 80's that had a small, factory oil cooler fin mounted behind the forks, and pumped oil through it to keep oil temperatures relatively manageable. If it can be done, that (and a MF battery) would be the perfect solution to our potential stator problems!

With some of the incredable modifications I heard about in here, has anyone done this yet?

I wouldnt think it would be that much of a problem. Although the external oil lines are very small diameter. Some how you would need to tap into the lines, and run it through a radiator. My old 77 KZ 1000 had an external oil cooler mounted on the front of the frame.

I don't imagine it would be too hard. The oil line modification would probably be the hardest part. Mounting a separate radiator wouldn't be too hard as one could modify a transmission oil cooler from UHaul or the like.

An oil cooler for our bike was discussed in an earlier forum at:

https://www.vn750.com/forum/showthrea...light=pressure

But if someone can offer up some better suggestions than were given there, then hey, go for it!!!.....

Oil Cooler

I found an oil filter adapter on eBay at this link;
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda...QQcmdZViewItem

If the link doesn't work, search for this item number; 220007341390

Does this fit our bikes? It uses 20mmX1.5 threads on the filter, which, according to the description, is a Fram PH6017A. I believe this is the filter for our bikes, is it not?

Maybe, just maybe something already exists to help us out?

The only thing I see that might be difficult with that would be if there's enough room at the oil filter location to screw that on. If it's not too tight of a fit, the brass oil line fittings could be removed, the adaptor installed, then the fittings put back on (and hopefully pointing in a usable direction)

This Is Almost Exactly What Mt Old Z1000 Had On It As Standard Exept The Oil Lines Pushed In And Had A Small Screw To Hold Them In Place But It Would Not Be A Problem To Alter The Fittings On This One (if They Where In The Way) So They Wern't In The Way.

Also You Can Fitt A Finned Aluninium Cover Around The Oil Fillter That Pushes On To Make It Act Like An Oil Cooler, I Know They Are Available For Some Bikes Already , Also Some Harley's, But Would Be Easy To Make/have Made As A Custom Item.

this is the next step once summer comes about to see if its really needed. i will measure oil temps on hot days, both sitting and running on hot days (live in dallas, 100+ is common). Right now here is all that will be needed
1) a low resistance oil radiator
2) oil filter adaptor and relocator
3) appropriate oil line material (rubber or steel braded)
4) Bypass on the lines to cut out the oil radiator.
5) depending on mounting location, possiably another fan

Cost is around $400 for that set up using quality parts. Worth it if its really needed. Also moves the oil filter, i know i've already lost 2 to rocks.
