Torque Settings

Will the torque settings change if I have a 6 inch extension or a universal socket at the end of a torque wrench? Will I have to compensate ?

I don't know by how much, but both the extension and the universal will alter the readings. Perhaps Tim may have a hard answer for you.

It should make no difference, Only if you have a offset like a crow foot on the wrench.
That is out of a Toyota manual.

I agree with Chad. Shouldn't make much difference.
What ya could do is, find a nut/bolt that will fit the socket with the extention and/or universal, but does not need either of those to reach it.
Check the torque with, then without, and see if ya get a noticable difference. That way you'll know for sure.

Ya know, that's a good idea Hyper! Wouldn't have thought of that.

the extension shouldnt make a difference so long as its not a cheapie one where you can get almost 45 degs of play of of it. The universal might make a minor though if the bolt/nut isnt directly in the middle. Keep in mind tourqe is measured in ft*lbs. that means using a 1 ft handle, how ever many lbs you apply to it. so the moment you adjust that length, the ratio changes.

EX)
25 ft*lbs using an 18 inch long ratchet means at the handle there is 16 2/3 lbs on the handle of force. so if your extension give you an added inch of play in length, then things change a lil. added inch of play brings tourqe on the nut to 26.38 lbs.
