Thinking of switching to Synthetic oil

Hey guys,

Just picked up my 1993 vn750 last summer. I have no idea what kind of engine oil the previous owner used before but am thinking of switching to synthetic (probably Rotella). with 13000miles on the bike will I mess anything up by switching to synthetic oil?

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Cheers

With a low RPM engine such as ours, I would not move to synthetic. I run Rotella T6 on my FZ6, but I run standard Rotella T on my VN750 and my wife's ER6n.

The biggest thing about oil is actually having some in the engine. That's the most important part. However, I think it'd be a huge waste of money to run T6 or another synthetic in an engine that was designed for standard dino oil.

You would see zero benefit from that transition. Since there is no benefit for the extra cash you'd spend, it does not seem like a route I'd take.

I see that you live in NY. How many months do you ride per year and how many total miles per season? Many do an oil change at the very beginning of the season and are good for the season because their season is short and the total mileage is relatively low. Some years in the Mid Atlantic we get a longer season than other times. It happened just previous to this past one. This past winter I went for long periods without getting riding weather. The benefits of a synthetic oil do not come into play most years in my personal opinion. If I was making long distance round trip runs to Florida or cross country to California I may go with the upgrade or maybe just service the oil more often. I am sure you will receive a wide variety of responses here and most will have very valid points. good luck with your own decision on the subject.

PS There should be an "Oh, No" not another oil thread soon also to add to the whole thing. I am a bit shocked it hasn't happened already. lol

I ran schaffers synthetic blend oil in my bike. And guess what, something that does not even get exposed to oil blew up at 50K miles. The exhaust valve on my rear jug snapped.

I think people get too worked up about oil. Get something that works with the wet clutches and go with it.

Just look for JASO-MA certification on the back. The Rotella line now is JASO-MA certified, but most dino oils are as well. Castrol GTX, etc.. Just make sure its JASO-MA, the weight is proper for the temperature range you ride in, and that you actually change it every 3k miles/1 year (they say 6 months but that's a bit short for me.. ymmv)

I been using Castrol GTX in all of my vehicles since the 70's....Harleys, trucks, bikes, cars....never an issue....I even used Castrol 2 cycle in my old motocross Bultaco...Castrol is very nice on clutch plates too....10-40 for the VN unless ya live in Death Valley or the Gobi.....then its 20-50...

Why hasnt the Post Nazi chimed in yet ???...getting concerned here, lol....

My neighbor is a petrochem engineer....Id ask him his opinion, but he's in the Middle East right now teaching them the benefits of synthetic oils (ie..."sell that dirty stuff in the ground cheap to us to get rid of it, and switch to this new liquid gold !")....lolol.....he wants to retire....they wont let him yet, lol....
