Bizarre Rattle

Hey all,

I recently installed TOC's MCCTs which, obviously, quieted the cam chains. Now the bike has this rattle which moves with the rpms. Can't hear at idle, only when riding the bike. Bike is performing well at all rpms. The noise sound just like the front brakes when they are in use.

I have tried searching for the noise, but all I can come up with is a rattle in the right-front turn signal and maybe the plastic guard over the radiator. The rattle in the signal is the deflectector inside the housing. The plastic cover for the radiator would be the least likely the culprit.

I thought it was my garage door remote that I use as a keychain, but that wasn't it either. The noise is definately coming from somewhere between my legs to the front of the bike.

Any ideas would be helpful, thanks!

I only understand what I don't understand.

Can you hear the rattle sitting still, but reving the engine up?

Not really. I don't hear it until I hit 5K+ when riding and I don't like doing that without a load on the motor.

I can't even feel it when I hear it. That lets me know it not engine/tranny related. It has to be something lose that I overlooked.

Are your (4?) radiator mounting bolts tight ? The radiator cover/Shield mounts with 3 bolts.

I have a similar rattle that I had since day one....drove me bananas for a long time.

I hear it at 4K rpm and it is on the right side somewhere.....

I recently decided that it had to be the throttle cables that have the wire "spring" over the outer casing. Under the neck covers they run down the right side past the radiator cap. I wrapped them with rubber tape and realized they were rattling together and against the radiator cap. They are still making some noise further down, so I plan on using gas hose to dampen them where they can make contact with other areas....like where they are routed just under the right "EAR" mounting bolts.

It seemed to help in my case.....just curious if others have had similar rattles.

I've read on this forum where another had the cable rattle issue below the right ear...
---resolved with splitting a piece of fuel line, placing over cable....

Bike doesn't have stock exhaust, so no heat shield.

I'll have to check out the throttle cables when I get a chance. Thanks!

The problem with MCCT's is that now you will hear lots of little rattles and what nots that you didn't hear before. And when like in my case, MCCT's combined with HD Sportster Muff's, you hear every little rattle, like the keys in the bar, the "Bell" under the radiator, the front tire contact patch rolling on the road, and on, and on....

I gave up on most noises as chasing Gremlins, and that's what the bell is for.
