horrific damage from front acct failure, pictures!

here is a vulcan motor i tore down last winter. it is a 2002 model with 12k miles. the p/o said it died with no bad noise (yeah right!). all you new riders, find out what an mcct is and why it replaces the acct (tensioner). and all you guys that talk about acct conversions so much, here are pics and not words. the p/o lost $2000 or more when i bought this from him, all because he ignored the grinding noises. look at the cam teeth, and the valve that was sucked all the way to the bottom of the case. this motor was well beyond reasonable repair, it just would not have been cost effective. this was the front jug. and with only 12k miles, what a shame. the toc mcct's would have cost $100. to repair this professionally would be several thousand dollars. i am going to be putting the toc's on my 88 vn750 soon, it is just beginning to clatter a bit. enjoy, and be happy it ain't YOUR bike!

that's fantastic you were able to. i am guessing MOST of the casual riders would not attempt to split the cases and rebuild the motor. it's a pretty big job. really i wanted to show some of the new riders what can happen if they ignore noisy cam chains. this bike had ONLY 12K MILES! had the owner even taken it in to a dealer, the repairs would have been a couple hundred. he lost his butt big-time due to blowing it off. the p/o was able to change spark plugs and that is about it. if your bike is making bad noise, park it!! sell it!! take it to the dealer!! don't ride it until it looks like this!!

hehe nice!

hey man i love the pic of rasputin! if y'all don't know who he is, google him! the man was murdered like 3 times before he would die! fed him poison, stabbed him, and dumped him in a frozen river to kill him! he was definatley a "special" person who could mesmerize people with his eyes... i used to have his pic on my wall and would tell people it was my grandpa... hehe

Just a quick thing on personal experience, I bought the TOC ACCT rebuild kit when I got the bike 2 years ago. Put the front cylinder acct spring on, put it on the bike without the ACCT cap bolt, started the bike and all was great. Super quite. put the cap bolt on and started getting a very light raddle. backed off the bolt, quite. The cap bolt was bottoming out on the acct adjustment bolt and the innerds being left hand thread and the cap bolt being right hand thread was causing it to release tention when tightening the cap bolt and it bottoming out. Wonder if this may be a common problem that caused the acct's to not be able to add tention to the chain because of the cap bolt wedge again the adjustment internals.

the p/o bought a new battery and spark plugs thinking that was the problem! he actually said "it idles ok but won't rev up"... the new plug electrode was immediately mashed shut... i picked her up for $500 on cl, he was asking $1000 and trying to make like it was a minor problem! yeah i can't even imagine how horrible the noise must have been with the sprocket teeth being ground off, let alone knocking a couple valves thru the piston cap. i have blown a couple motors in my days, yeah you know when it happens what it is! makes a pretty gruesome sound... plus i imagine if it jumped a tooth here and a tooth there it was pretty much running on one cylinder there at the end of its poor life.
