Oil Filter Size??

Hi All -

I'm bringing an '86 VN750 with only 3,356 miles on the clock out of it's sleep and today when I changed the oil, I noticed the (original?) filter is bigger than the recommended Wal Mart filter (ST7317) that I learned about from lurking on here...

The filter O-rings seem to line up in the right place, but with the new, smaller filter, the edge of the filter mount-plate is visible, whereas with the original filter it isn't...does this make much of a difference? I wouldn't think so, but I wanted to check..

There are two Walmart Filters recommended. ST 7317 and ST 6607. Same size but one is longer, both work. These are no longer available. Check my old thread

Yeah, I lucked out and found one (two, actually) of the ST7317's on the shelf, so that's what I bought...it just leaves a bit of space on the plate when it's mounted, maybe a quarter inch...

Is the 6607 bigger?

History of changes to the vn750 over the years:
https://www.vn750.com/forum/showthrea...ght=color+year

Quote from above link:
Quote:
Oil filter
- '85-'94 = larger size 2.95" diameter
- '95 up = smaller size 2.76" diameter

Oil filter (mating) plate
- '85-'93 = 13169-1921 = 2.95" (75mm)
- '94 = 13169-1921 = 2.95" (75mm)
- '94 = 13270-1170 = 2.76" (70mm)
- '95 up = 13270-1170 = 2.76" (70mm)
As long as the filter seals against the mounting plate everything is good. IMO

DO I HAVE OTHER OIL FILTER OPTIONS ?
Yes. It's Sunday and you forgot to get a Kawasaki filter, or just not willing to dish out the extra cash. Here are some options that fit our bike (all years). All have superior filtering. Get the longer ones if possible. It only makes sense they usually have more surface are on the internal pleats to catch more dirt particles. Remember, these come is all sorts of colors. I do not want an orange or white filter on the front of my bike. Just use black spray paint before mounting.

First Choice: Filters about 3.25 inches long: -
Purolator Pure One PL14610, about $6. -
Mobil 1 M1-110, about $10. Made by Champion. -
Bosch 3323, about $6.Made By Champion. -
WalMart SuperTech ST7317, about $2. Made by Champion

Second Choice: Filters about 2.5 inches long: -
Purolator Pure One PL14612, about $6. -
Mobil M1-108, about $12. Made by Champion. -
Bosch 3300, about $6. Made by Champion. -
WalMart SuperTech ST6607, about $2. Made by Champion.

Re: Wal-Mart Oil Filters The ST 2808 has been replaced by the ST 3593A.
NAPA Gold has a high quality filter made by WIX that fits too. Sorry but I don`t have the part number.

If you can't remember the above part numbers, just ask for an oil filter for a V6 1998 Nissan Maxima or a 4cyl 2005 Honda Accord. I've had both of those cars, and they used the same oil filter. It just happens to be the same filter for a Vulcan 750. (These are two of the cars the filters in the above post fit.)

I just found a lot of 33 oil filters (PN#16097-1054 - for the older VN750s) for less than $2 per filter. I guess I am stocked up for a while.
