engine year identification

I have an engine that I am not sure came with the bike. This engine is black but it says on the side of the engine 749L. I figure it is a 750 even though it is black. I am wondering how to read the engine vin number? The engine vin number is.... VN750AE058422. If anyone knows how to read the engine Vin number I would appreciate your response. The frame is a 03 model.

The only year for a black engine was in an 85. They had both the 700 & 750 in black for that year only.
750 denotes it is a 750 The A indicates either a U.S. or Canadian engine. The rest of the numbers denotes the manufacturer date, but I'm not sure how to read them.

No VN750 in the US in '85. The rest of the serial # is just that; serial number, no date spec. Clymer's manual has the engine serial #s used in each year, but I can't find mine at the moment.

The Clymer manual is somewhat helpful with serial numbers for the first 3 or 4 years, but your serial number of VN750AE058422 only indicates that it came from a bike manufactured in 1995 or later.

I suspect a previous owner painted your engine.

Your number 058422 looks like it could be a fairly late model.
Possible it is even original to your 2003 frame?? Maybe??

It seems a strong possibility that there were fewer than 100,000 vn700/750 motorcyles ever made.
