Another Cam Tensioner Puzzle
Hey guys, I'm at my wit's end. I'll describe what I've done and my conclusion. I'm very mechanically adept.
I bought my bike new (2001). Slapping noise started at about 7,000 miles after the warranty expired. Various iterations of pretensioning the ACCT springs, making my own springs, the "Grambo" trick didn't really change anythiing. I installed MCCTs and torqued them down to the point that the engine dragged a little, no change. I installed spacers in the upper tensioner spring (about .150") no change. The noise is pronounced when cold, but pretty much disappears when warm. I have 35,000 miles on it now. I use Rotella T-6. I figure that most likely the cam chain is stretched or the internal tensioner mechanism is whacked. What do you guys think? Either way I'm going to keep riding until the engine requires a rebuild or totally fails. It runs fine otherwise, except my carb pilot jets need to be cleaned.
