My first engine pull

Tomorrow, in the wee hours of the morning before it gets stupid hot (I live in Florida) I will begin a task the likes of which I have never attempted. I'm going to pull the engine in my baby. I have a 1989 vn750 and she's sick. I attempted to replace the HLA's a few weeks ago but forgot to do ONE really real IMPORTANT thing. I forgot to set the engine at tdc before I took the camshafts and such apart. I know I know, thats a really dumb mistake. But hey, I've never worked on bikes before. So I was wondering if anyone had any advice on what i could do while the engine is out that would help her run better and last longer. Preferably things that don't cost any money, I'm a student and I'm flat-broke. I.E clean certain things or w/e. I'd appreciate any advice of any kind! I have the manual, and this time, I will be following it to the letter. I plan on getting it done in one, long, grueling day. Maybe two, since I don't have class on Monday. But my goal is to be riding tomorrow night.

Well, it will cost some money, but I would replace the balancers and internal shift rod, since they are both going to fail/disentegrate eventually. Might pick up the rod on ebay cheaper, just make sure it's from a model year after they went with the heavier rod. Sorry, can't remember exactly which year that was off the top of my head (1991?)

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

A little money saver. When I pulled my engine to replace my stator I priced the gaskets and they were not cheap. I bought some gasket material at the auto parts store and made my own. Where in Fl? Jax here
