Starter motor spins, tach revs, no engine sounds

OK, I've got a 97 VN750 that has been running fine (26,300 mi) only problems lately have been battery issues in the Texas heat.

Today I went to start it (about 3-5 seconds) and initially the motor cranked, but didn't fire. On my second start attempt, I only heard the whine of the starter and the tach revved up to about 5000, but from the sound, the motor wasn't cranking. I put it in 5th gear and rocked it back and forth to see if something might be frozen and it didn't appear to be. I removed the starter to test it off the bike and it spins fine. The gear that the starter pinion contacts looks to be fine. Have I sheared something off inside the engine? Where does the tach pick up its RPM reading from? Any ideas?

Charge the batt or jump start the bike. It may just be a low batt.

Yeah this probably should have been in the electrical thread.

I re-filled the battery yesterday and had it on the charger all night, so it should have been ok, but I have suspected for a while that I just need to replace it. She was due for an oil change anyway, which I had to drain to remove the starter, so I need to get a new filter and re-fill it before attempting the jump start.

Since you are still using a wet battery, when you change it out, get a Maintenance Free AGM like this Deka:

It will cure a lot of starting problems, especially if you get a set of NGK Iridium spark plugs, number DPR7EIX-9.

Just wanted to update....you guys were dead on! Bought a new sealed battery over the weekend, changed the oil and filter and she fired up on the first push of the button. Many thanks for the advice.
