First Oil Change

my New 2001 vn750 i just bought needs very little work. mainly a little TLC, and i think the brake drum needs to be centered. I doubt the shop did that when the PO installed the new rear tire. I dropped the oil hot, removed the oil screen, and all looks good. all those parts are there which is good. Put a new fram ph6010a filter, and 4 qts. of Castrol 10w40. after it ran a little with the new oil, i let it sit, and added the last .2 qts. My next order of business is the splines. IM not going to ride it too much till then, especially after hearing the 2001 yr. was one of the years in question. i'll most likely take pictures tomorrow or wednesday. and i'll have those for any who are interested.

buy you a better oil filter before you ride it much there is a list of good oil filters on her somewhere.

I found the list and here it is .Fram used to make a good product but sadly have cut back on quality.

First Choice: Filters about 3.25 inches long: -
Purolator Pure One PL14610, about $6. -
Mobil 1 M1-110, about $10. Made by Champion. -
Bosch 3323, about $6.Made By Champion. -
WalMart SuperTech ST7317, about $2. Made by Champion

Second Choice: Filters about 2.5 inches long: -
Purolator Pure One PL14612, about $6. -
Mobil M1-108, about $12. Made by Champion. -

This filter seems pretty long. and fat too. what has lowered in quality?

The filter paper for one. Just doesn't perform like they used to. May be issues with the valve too IIRC.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

You can often get the purolator filter on sale at advance auto. I picked up 5 or 6 of them last time and got them for about 3 bucks a pop. I use the same filter on the 1500.

Also, check your oil with the bike on the centerstand. You should have a small bubble at the top of the sight glass. It sounds like you might have over-filled if you put that much in the bike, and over-filling is not a good thing. Just FYI!

Ok - call me thick, but I wanted to ask everyone here instead of relying on printed or other materials : how much oil do you actually end up putting in your VN750 when you change the oil?

I did my second change yesterday, and I ended up putting about 3.5 quarts in (and that's with letting it run a bit to fill the filter and then re-checking). I know the tach guides all say 4.0L, and that converts to about 4.2 quarts. But there is NO way mine would hold that much without being overfilled. I'm curious to know what others have experienced.

I never knew how much oil I was using for an oil change, because I buy two different oils and they both come in a 1 gallon or 5 quart jug and I just watch the oil sight glass as I go, then start the bike and let it run for a minute or two, then shut it off and let the oil settle back for 5 or so minutes, then add some more oil. Never used a whole jug so it would be a guess, plus I never cared, as long as I got the tiny bubble at the top of my sight glass, I was happy. This question gets asked often on the forum over the years and the answers are always different between owners. Some probably drain more oil than others, and some probably fill the bike back up to different levels, or different sized tiny bubbles at the top of the sight glass. The main thing is to be above the line or mark on the edge of the sight window, and most of us like to just see a little bubble at the top, and depending on how much was drained out, the amount going back in will vary.

your'e supposed to Spin the rear wheel hard, then stomp the rear brake and hold it, then tighten the axle nut all the way. It says so in the manual.
