Muffler removal

I was going to attempt to remove my rear wheel earlier today, but I could not get my left muffler off. It is stuck on there pretty tight. I was able to get the clamp off as well as the heat shield. I sprayed some WD-40 on there and let it set, but still nothing.
I don't want to destroy the muffler until I get a set of slip ons, does anyone have any ideas?
Can the shift shaft seal be replaced without having to remove the engine?
I noticed a pretty good leak coming from it tonight. And I also noticed a lot of play in the shaft. Not up and down, but in and out, about a 1/4 inch.
I will look at the exploded parts list, but is that too much play?
It shifts great, and has never acted like it was stuck.
Thanks all.

Undo the shocks. This allows the wheel to move up and down. This will give the clearence you need to remove the axle.

I don`t know about changing the shift shaft seal, but you can take up the 1/4" play with a few washers between the case and the shift lever.
