Question Possible head gasket problem??

Hi, bit of advice needed here. When I start up from cold I get the usual water vapor out of the exhausts - more than usual with the cold weather we have here at the moment. However, the right hand pipe always takes much longer to stop throwing out the vapor than the left one. I have also noticed that the bike runs on 1 cylinder for 3 or 4 seconds on start-up from cold. Hot starting is fine. I have checked the coolant level & it seems fine as far as I can tell. Also, there appears to be no water getting into the oil. Am I being paranoid here in thinking there may be the tiniest weep of coolant into the front cylinder? This, to me, could possibly explain the starting on one cylinder & the extra vapor from the right hand pipe. Other than that, the bike runs a treat & doesn't seem at all down on power despite having 72,000 miles on the clock. Anyone else experienced this problem or have any advice?

If you have a coolnt leak it will burn up, smell like cotton candy and be verry white. If you dont have that smell you dont hav a headgasket problem. On cold start mine starts on one cylender to and the second one a second later.

i am with ccspinner on this. unless you can smell burn antifreeze (very sweet and unusual smell) then you should be fine. also are you riding or is it sitting there while it warms up. makes a big difference in the cold, cause the front cyl. is out in the open while the second eats the heat from the first and wind is blocked by ur legs and so on.....

btw i dont have a prob with one cyl. start up. its just hard to start. you may check your carb to make sure its still balanced

Thanks for the advice guys, much appreciated. I guess I am being a little paranoid about the vapor from the right hand pipe.

oh also just remembered Ernie, if your using cheap gas with a high water content, that will do the same thing with the vapor, but it will also run crappy. I.E. gas from race track and so on

I usually fill up with BP Ultimate 97 or Shell 95. I suppose there's always the possibility that water could have got into the tank somehow. I'm due a fill-up today so i'll see if I notice any difference. Like you say though, it should run rough if the gas is contaminated but it runs real sweet. I still remember the good ol' days when we could still get 98 octane leaded, was rocket fuel compared to the gas we get today. In fact, I remember my dad filling up his car with 100 octane leaded when I was a kid in the 1970's. Been a long time since that stuff was legal here.

You dont need 97 the bke recomends 87, Runs good on it. Ive used as low as 87 and high as 110, Felt no difference in how it ran. Got better gas milage with cheeper gas, Strange but true.

Yea Ernie, I used to run Sunoco 101 octane in my 67 GTO, probably around 1974. I have run 83 and 93 octane in the bike and don't see a difference. You would think with the high compression the higher octane would run better.
