It's possible, but there will likely be some issues. The 1996 Vulcan 500 is a completely different (and in my opinion a lot better) bike that the 1997-2009. The engine is basically the same, and was used in the 1985-1987 454 LTD, 1987-1996 VN500 LTD, 1997-2009 VN500, and 1987-2009 EX500. It's a wonderful engine (except when it comes time to adjust the valves) I have owned a bought new 1986 454 LTD, 1988 EX500, and 2009 EX500.

I am a motorcyclist, NOT a biker.

2013 Royal Enfield Bullet 500, converted to carb
2001 Yamaha XT225, heavily modified
2004 Honda Rebel 250
1979 Vespa P200E
2002 Vulcan 750 parts bike
1994 Yamaha XT225 parts bike

Saw your private message and wanted to respond that this is outside of this forum's wheelhouse, not many people here will have had experience with the VN500. There are probably some dedicated forums on the web that would be better suited to helping you.

best of luck
