Starting trouble

Hi everyone. Ive been digging through the forums here for awhile trying to find a solution to my problem. Haven't found a solution yet so I figured I would ask.
I bought a second hand vn 750 recently and after a short while it has become almost impossible to start.
When I press the ignition switch it starts to turn over but won't start. I can only do this a few times before the battery dies and requires recharging (I have tried two different batteries with the same result). Occasionally when trying to start the bike backfires (sounds like a 12 gauge going off). Once it backfires it usually starts first try afterwards. There's no way that's healthy for the engine though.
I'd be grateful for any help on this issue.
Thanks,
Bootknife

Get an AGM battery if the one you have is a wet cell. Backfires when trying to start usually mean weak or bad battery.
Install some NGK iridium plugs. Put some Seafoam in the tank.

Be nice if you post a introduction in the Newbie section BTW.

Thanks knife maker.
I replaced the plugs with iridium ones recently and the same problem. Both batteries i tried were wet. I'll have a look for an agm battery.
I'll post something in the newbie section. Say hello to everyone

A quick way to see if it's a bad battery is to use jumper cables and hook it up to your car battery (make sure the car is NOT running)
If it starts right up, you got a bad battery.
