Removed Mufflers - - Results

I have wanted to get a bit more sound out of my bike. Looking around here, I came up with buying Cruzers, buying HD Sportster mufflers (with possible baffle removal), buying Cobra exhaust, removing the stock baffles, or removing the entire stock mufflers.

My budget is essentially $0, so that left only the last two options. Removing the stock baffles seemed nice, but there's no going back from that if I didn't like it. So I pulled the mufflers off (goat left in place).

It's definitely loud, but it actually wasn't as loud as I thought it would be! Before I couldn't hear the engine over the wind at 65mph, but I can now. It sounds ok at cruise, but it sounds really nice below 4k! It's like a Harley that is able to rev past 5500.

I can't tell if the power is the same or if I lost power. It might be that it sounds more powerful but it's the same power, so it feels like less. My butt dyno isn't calibrated.

I do my best to not run the bike harder than needed while in neighborhoods. Though I rode Sunday morning and and the cold required an extended warm up period. My driveway slopes upwards to the street, and I COULD NOT get up it until it was good and warm. I felt bad.

At least I can go back to stock quickly.

EDIT: I added an update to this thread, after 17 months with this mod.

After my earshave I did the same with mine. I lucked out and got a pair of screaming eagles for just under $20 on eBay. I love the sound but some days need ear plugs.

I'll have to get pictures for you. It's perhaps a little odd, but even the stock mufflers looked a bit odd to me. With the pipes that short, you can feel the exhaust when stopped with feet down. It doesn't hit your legs/pants, but it is noticeable. I don't know what it's like for a passenger. I haven't carried one yet.

The rear brackets of the heat shields are now floating, as they were originally anchored to the mufflers. It still felt pretty secure, so I am not concerned.

I left on the goats belly for both ease of change, and for the balancing effect. It probably cuts the noise down slightly compared to true straight pipes. I'm not interested in THAT much noise.
