Also known as the side oil drain....which most use to drain their oil.
Do you have an owners manual? You can down load one. (Hopefully someone will provide a link)
I've always drained it from the bolt on the bottom of the engine first, then I remove the oil screen. There's always more oil that drains at the screen.
I figured pulling the screen cap first might be too much of a gusher to contain. But maybe not since the cap is slotted inside. So KM, oil didn't run all over when you pulled the cap first?
Don't over-tighten this cap. It seals with an o-ring and doesn't need to be extra tight. Many of these get stripped and broken because they're over-tightened. I barely tighten mine and it's always hard to break loose.
I always used the side drain, just cracking it part way open is enough to get most of the oil out, then remove it all the way. pretty controlled release really
