This is a plug on the side of the motor on the left hand, stator side its on the oil pan itself

I've always drained it from the bolt on the bottom of the engine first, then I remove the oil screen. There's always more oil that drains at the screen.

I figured pulling the screen cap first might be too much of a gusher to contain. But maybe not since the cap is slotted inside. So KM, oil didn't run all over when you pulled the cap first?

Don't over-tighten this cap. It seals with an o-ring and doesn't need to be extra tight. Many of these get stripped and broken because they're over-tightened. I barely tighten mine and it's always hard to break loose.
