Water pump play

Is it normal for the water pump to have 1/2 turn of free rotation?

I recall some lateral play being normal, verified by others here. Never tried to rotate the impeller, I assumed it was direct gear-drive and wouldn't move much.

Pretty sure the oil pump is chain-drive ... Not sure about the impeller now.

The oil pump is chain driven which in turn drives a spindle which is split in half and joined together to run the water pump. It has a simple slot and key joint so can be taken apart during tear down, If one side of the spindle has broken off this would create the half turn you stated .....not good but is the screw loose on impeller ? I would remove it and check threads.

Just thinking about your prob, The impeller fits on shaft by a staggered joint this may have worn also .I would take it off and give a good clean and see if there is any rounding off of parts.

The nut was tight and there is no play in the shaft. I replaced the impeller and mechanical seals.
I ran the engine today and it is pumping.
