Spring "spruce up"...

So I had some password issues and haven't been on here in quite a while. But that's finally fixed, and my Vulcan is out of winter storage! I admit, I was thinking of looking for something a little bigger this year (had my eye on a V-Star 950 Tourer), but financially that wasn't quite feasible.

So, instead, I've decided to take a little spare cash and make a couple of improvements to this old girl. First up was the seat. The stock 1995 seat was ok, but the way the passenger seat curves down into the driver's seat, it really only leaves about 3"-4" of flat seating area for the passenger. Every bump or application of the brakes had her sliding into me, and adjusting her position at every stop sign and traffic light.

Here's the stock seat (most of you know it well), with the backrest extension (from Shark88).

So I took it to Eastern Sun Auto Top in Wharton, NJ. I work for a car dealer in Northern NJ, and we do a lot of work with Eastern Sun for cloth-to-leather conversions, sunroofs, etc. They have a guy who is very good with motorcycle seats. He added material to reshape the passenger seat area and transition to driver's seat, added gel padding for both seats, and made a new cover for both the seat, and the extension pad (eliminating the buttons that look like they came of a 1970s wingback chair...). I think they did a great job! Admittedly, I just got it back today and have only a short 20-mile solo ride so far, but I think it's going to work out great for both of us.

If you are in need of someone to redo a seat, and your anywhere near northern NJ, I'd highly recommend these guys!

Next up - new saddlebags. Still trying to decide which ones I want. I'll post new pics once they're on.

Seat update: got a few hundred miles on it now, major improvement. The added gel soaks up a lot of vibration and makes bumps a lot easier on the backside. Lorri loves the new shape of the passenger seat, more comfortable and she's not constantly sliding into me.

Round 2 - New Saddlebags! These Willie & Max bags were on the bike when I bought it. They were probably really nice a few years ago, but they're showing their age. Rusty buckles, one strap is torn between two holes, and the stitching on the back side of one bag has opened up, so you can reach into the bag from the back!

So, the old bags have been ditched. Installed a new set of Saddlemen Midnight Express Drifter bags, size Jumbo.

Now I've gone and ordered a windshield.....

That seat looks great!
I actually like the look of the buttoned seat but the problem is the button pockets fill up with water when it rains.

I always rode without a windshield, except for a coast to coast round trip in 1988. I knew I was looking at a long summer on the road and did not want to fight the wind and bugs from Calif to the east coast and back so I mounted a windshield. Took it off after I returned and never used it again.
My current VN750 had a small windshield on when I bought it and I didn't think I'd keep it but I have since decided that I like it. Its big enough to cut a path through the air and deflect various armor plated, flying bugs but small enough so I still feel the wind.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, the buttoned seat after a evening rain and overnight freeze..... Joy! Glad that's gone.

OK, well here is the final upgrade for now - the windshield! Added a Memphis Shades "Shooter" shield. Looks good and really punches a decent hole in the wind. Frozen chin on 40 degree mornings is now a thing of the past.
