Help with highway pegs

I just made and installed the Knifemaker floorboards. Easy project and very good plans, thanks Knifemaker.
I have enough leftover aluminum to make brackets for highway pegs. My questions are; 1st do I need to replace the bolts on the frame with longer bolts when I add the thickness of the aluminum brackets (5/16ths). and 2nd how do I determine how long to make the brackets? I know I can just sit on the bike but how do I measure, and/or is there a "norm or standard" length.
Thanks

I'd replace the bolts for longer ones. Make sure to add a 3-/16 spacer to the top bracket to compensate for the angle of the frame.

Easiest way to gauge size is to make a mock up using a piece of wood or heavy card stock. You want to make sure the front fender won't touch anything even when the forks compressed and you don't want the pegs out so far that your butt has to slide forward to use them.

You should still have a slight bend at the knee with your feet on the peg.

another thing is to make sure your pegs are far enough out to keep you from hitting your knee on the air box
