newbie buying protective gear... seeks $.02

I am looking at buying protective gear...
Here's what I like so far. I am trying to decide which jacket and which pant to go for.. I want something that will work for the most season for the best money, but also something that will protect me well...

I am leaning towards the flex or transition jacket and flex pants, but I am wondering is if the pants will be super hot in the summer or if they will take up too much space... I don't have saddle bags... I wish I could find some chaps with knee armor... Oh, I know looks don't matter as much as safety... but will it look stupid to buy leather chaps along with the flex/transition? Or should I get the denim armored jacket and the leather chaps?

JACKETS:

http://tourmaster.com/xcart/product....tid=251&cat=25 (only drawback is the denim's tendency to soak up water if I get caught in the rain on a 2-3 hour trip to parent's house...)

If you decide on the denim, some waterproofing spray will help with wet rides.

As for chaps, I don't think they'd look too bad if they somewhat matched with the color you chose of other gear. Only drawback there is visability, as most chaps are black or brown.

Sorry I don't have any input on you choices, as I usually wear a leather jacket/chaps, and only late last year got a textile jacket which I haven't had much of a chance to put to use yet.

I got my pants and jacket from the Motorcycle Superstore. They always have a huge variety. There is more stuff for street bikes though, if you dont mind going over the cruiser line It is what i did and got me a Shift Dyer jacket and LBZ pants dirt cheap. Here is a link for cruiser jackets:

Please read the "Buying Gear" info I posted in "motorcycle safety"...

You did not mention where you live, but if most of your riding is in the summer and it is hot where you live, I'd suggest getting mesh gear.

I have the Firstgear mesh jacket and the Fieldsheer Titanium Mesh pant.
(these are not waterproof) but very cool to wear in the summers heat.

Not sure why you picked all Tourmaster gear , as I think for the money Fieldsheer , Firstgear and Olympia give you more for the money.

But if you want the best stuff out there, and can spend the money, go here:
http://www.motoport.com/

Their stuff is the best in this catagory. Their Kevlar mesh jacket is very nice.

If you are looking for gear that is a bit warmer, and waterproof, the new "layered" stuff offered by Firstgear is very versitle, but note that most make what they term as a "Waterproof liner", meaning the jacket will get wet..but you won't.
In this type of gear look for closable vents. I have a Fieldsheer "Aviator" Jacket, this is almost a 4 season jacket, as it has a warm liner, is waterproof, and has several vents on the arms chest and back you can open in warmer weather...but is still a bit too hot for 80+ days in my opinion.

I am not a fan of Joe Rocket stuff, and be wary of any gear not mentioned here. (Coretech is part of Tourmaster, so add them to the list above) As there are cheap "knock-offs" that are not made as well as name brand items.

The "Draggn' Jean" stuff is not as good as they sound, so unless you really like looking like a gay country singer, stick with Cordura Nylon.

I like the Fieldsheer stuff. The pants have the armor over the knees, shins and hips. The solid pants feel bullet proof, but are way too hot in summer. I got a pair of the mesh pants for warm weather riding. They have the same armor but are way, way more comfortable in the warm weather. If you're really serious about protecting yourself, don't get chaps. I'm not sure there's a worse place to get your skin peeled off than your butt.

I'm sorry... I live in Michigan.. so I will be looking at tops of 80 degrees riding- most likely 50-70s.
I would get the black flex jacket most likely... I'm just worried the flex pants would be too warm for summer riding if they are worn over a pair of jeans...
I will look at all the links you guys put up. thanks!
