Thumbs up front end hits bumps,holes hard

My basic stock 91vn750 with 15K miles hits bumps and holes harder than I remember my old 900 sporty,could just be my memory,alot of abuse.I been reading all the posts I can find with this same problem. So Ill start with the oil but cant find out what weight and how much,how to change it out. My other question is how to change adjustment on my back shocks. I weigh 185 and can spin the top cover by hand between 1 and2 but thats it.Do I need a tool for this and will this help the overall ride. Not sure if spinning that cap is doing anything.Wouldnt mind trying to lower the bike also so Ill try to find some 11 inch shocks,which I think I read thats a safe start. Thanks for any input.Paulywog.

Do an advanced "Search" for the fork rebuild video by Roach (member) here. He did several on different topics and they are very well done with all the explanations you will need. I read a few posts where members have used ATF with no problems. Also go to the general heading of "Wheels, Suspensions, Brakes" on the Forum page and open the fifth "Sticky". There will be a list of everything you may have questions about. Good luck.

**Really not sure if the Big "C" is back right now
but having to face the fact that this is a lifetime routine
going forward. Five operations done and it still continues.

Assuming you just got the bike. Perhaps the forks have a leak? Or no oil?

Yes, be a good idea to replace the fork oil. Even better idea to instal a set of new Progressive fork springs.

The rear shock adjustment is just for rebound or compression dampening, no ones sure which. You can pump some air in the shocks. Try about 20lbs each. Use a hand pump. There is no preload adjustment on the stock shocks....just the ability to add air.

Can anyone explain what the numbers on the outside cups at the top of the rear shocks correspond to? I know the usual air pressure is 10% of the total weight load on the bike but the manual adjustments baffle me.

Yes, as the load increases so should the air pressure that is put into the shocks but the basic formula here has always been estimated as a basic 10% of the total load weight. Is that in line with what you believe or are you saying something different such as a different percentage?

If it is as all the other bikes I have owned and they appear to be, the spring outside the shock controls compression. The numbers are dampening and adding air will increase dampening to a large extent and compression to a smaller extent.

HTH.

edit-I think most just dampen to taste though trial/error. I do.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions. I will try to find videos and other info. KM I got this bike last Aug. and have put on 1500 miles or so since then.I joined the forum last fall.Im the guy that posted in the belly that I collect vintage knives,my favorites being bowies from Solingen,Germany.
