15000 Mile Maintenance

Well it's hard to believe but I have already gotten to 15000 miles on the bike. This weekend I did a good bit of maintenance: oil and filter change, drained and replaced coolant, refreshed/replaced brake fluid (still got the brake lever zip tied to the grip ) and I thought a fork oil change since I've had the bike for over a year and bought it used and doubt it has ever been done. But that was not to be...

So I understand from reading the Clymer manual that the drain plugs for the forks are installed with some locking agent...basically loctite on steroids apparently. So I was foiled trying to get that part done. I had everything done up to the point of removing the plug and draining the old oil and those plugs just won't budge with anything I have. So I could either go buy some kind of allen wrench like socket to use with a breaker bar or my impact driver or I could remove the fork tubes and pour out the oil like Roach did in his videos. I was trying not to do that.

So for those who have changed their fork oil, how did you do it? Remove the fork tube or muscle the drain plug out?

Also, since I have your attention, did you replace the retainer clips or just reuse the ones that were there?

Never had an issue with the drain plugs themselves, but at the point your at, the easiest to do would be to just pull the top cap out of the fork(need to do this anyways to refill, take them off the frame and pour it out of the top.

I reused my retaining rings, but next time I take the forks apart (?if?) I'll replace them then.

My old oil came out very nasty, almost gelatinous when I did mine, so I went through the work of complete dis-assembly and thoroughly cleaned everything out.

......I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere then in any city on earth.

A lot of people seem to have trouble with those bolts. I wonder if it would be possible to heat them with a propane torch without doing any damage? Just enough heat to loosen the threadlocker without discoloring the aluminum, nothing near glowing hot.

Doesn't appear that it would be too hard to pull the tubes and just dump the oil out, like Roach did. Mine want to slide right out when I loosen the clamp bolts, almost dropped them out once.

Reminds me, I didn't complete all of my 15k service.
