Question tire pressure

My owner's manual tells me that the best tire pressure for my stock Bridgestone tires is 28 psi (front) and 32 psi (rear). (I have 4000 miles on them.)

I've also asked various Bridgestone and Kawasaki reps, and they all say that: 1) lower pressure (e.g. 28/28) provides a smoother ride, and 2) higher pressure (e.g. 36/38) will reduce wear on the tires. Invariably, however, they defer to the owner's manual recommendation because that's what the Kaw engineers have determined.

I'm wondering what all of you think?

I will probably go for a tire upgrade somewhere between 6000 and 9000 miles.

By the way, I'm now using a digital ROADGEAR Tire Pressure Gauge. So far I really like it. Theoretically, it's very accurate (+/- 1%), has a lithium battery which will last "forever", and a 5-year warranty. It even "talks" to me, which is not nearly as annoying as I had anticipated. (I had originally used an Accugage with hose, but it was off by around 4 psi according to the local tire center, so I returned it.)

Maybe they've changed the owner manual since I got mine (a '94'), it recommends ranges - front 26 - 28, and rear 28 - 32. So, with just me, I go with the 26 front, 28 rear, and will go up to 28 front, 32 rear if I'm going to be taking a passenger. Just my 2 cents worth.

i prefer the higher values.... infact I run 29-30 in the front tire. this is in part cause i am heavier, i weigh in around 210 without gear. I've found the higher values make ride a lil rougher, but improve handling.

Same here. The slight bit more roughness in the ride doesn't bother me that much. And the better handling is more important to me.
I broke my butt in on the dirtbike seats, and haven't had any ride on the Vulcan beat me up like those seats do on the trails!!

I'd suggest.......
Finding a particular route you enjoy, and do often (some twisties, or atleast slightly sharp turns and straight aways). Say something around 25 miles (just a suggested amount, do what you're comfortable doing)
Do the route a couple times with the slightly lower amount of pressure. Pay attention to how the bike handles/reacts to the road, to the comfort level, and to the mileage as well.
Then pump a few more pounds in, and try it again. See what differences there are and determine which way you'd rather it be.

I don't mean to do this all in one day (unless that's what your up for ) but do the same route every time so you can easily recognise the different way the pressure effects your riding style. Because the factory only put those #'s as suggestions. Besides, would you trust a manufacturer that doesn't lube the splines ??!!!

I ride with the higher pressures (30 fr, 32 r) as well, for the reasons everyone else noted (less wear on the tires, zippier ride). If you think you might end up having to ride in the rain (e.g., you ride to work, the weather forecast is iffy), I'd suggest dropping that to 28/30 - a little more tire surface on the road is always a good thing in slippery conditions. I do like Hyper's suggestion, however, for taking 'er out and seeing what you prefer for your everyday ride.

Come to think of it, perhaps I'll do that myself when I get back home - if this little period of global warming continues. I'm in Stamford, CT until Thursday - isn't there someone on the Forum from up this way?? Gosh, I could use a ride.

I'm riding on Dunlop 404's too, same pressure as Artman. I weigh in at 265 plus gear so I keep em hard. Have my rear shocks aired up to 41 as well.
