Can I take both tires off on the center stand?

Hey Guys-

When my bike is on the center stand I notice that the front tire is touching the ground. I have two new tires and I would like to get them swapped out at the same time. Am I able to take both tires off while the bike is on the center stand safely?

I also plan on doing the spline while I am at it.

Any advice or strategy would be appreciated

Not unless you have it perfectly balanced. Seriously if you want to take both wheels off you are going to have to put someting under the frame. try some boards or a cinderblock. You can put it on the center stand and then you can place your platform of choice under the frame.

If you have a floor jack you can raise the front a little by putting the jack under the front frame and do both tires. Then you can raise or lower it as needed when working on the spline.

I would just do one at a time but if it is a good trip to take the rim and tires in to get them swapped put the bike up on the centerstand atop a 2x4 (This will make rear tire removal and spline lube much easier) take another 2x4 the width of the frame by the starter and add a couple 1x4's to it to make a c, put a bottle jack or floor jack under that and raise it slowly! remove rear tire first then jack it up and remove the front, have em changed put the front back on and then do the spline lube (full procedure) then put the rear on!
I'm sure you could buy a motorcycle jack or a set of jackstands but I'm a cheap bastard and thats how I would do it! hope that helps!

actually just a 2x4 might work without making a c, cant remember if the starter sticks below the frame there!!!!

Nope, the starter does not get in the way. Just stick the 2x4 on the bottom of the engine case near the front and jack up there while on the center stand. You could do it in a pinch without a block of wood there, though I would not recommend it.

......I'd rather wake up in the middle of nowhere then in any city on earth.

Thanks for the pointers all. I have taken the rear tire off and started the spline lube. The good news is everything was all greased up down there. So I'm thinking I will just remove the old grease. Clean as much as I can and put the moly on and reassemble. I think something was leaking under there because the bottom of the final drive is coated in blackness. I'm thinking it's leaking final drive oil ? That would be all it could be at that spot right ?! Thanks guys

do you mean inside the arm where the drive shaft is? Make sure your O-ring on the drive splines is good. Apparently they are known to fail after awhile and leave a lot of grease when they do.

Yes you can remove both wheels, but you will need to block up the front of the bike somehow. In 40+ years of working on bikes, I have never had one of those expensive and space consuming motorcycle lifts, and I never will. Never needed one. For dirt bikes I never even had a proper stand, I used an empty 5 gallon bucket to hold the bike up off the ground, and also to hold tools and parts. The big money in working on bikes goes into super high quality hand tools, if your bike means anything to you. I prefer Snap-On.
