Another Lowering Question

I replaced the stock rear 12.5" shocks with 11" Progressive 412's....
It "feels" like the seat is much lower than 1.5" from where it was with the stock shocks. Maybe the geometry of the bike drops the seat more??
Also, and here is the real question, I bought the Progressive lowering kit for the front forks. Some say the front and rear of the bike need to be lowered the same amount. The question is, is it a one to one relationship? I mean, if I put in rear shocks that are 1.5" shorter than stock, do I also shorten the forks 1.5"??

The point behind lowering the same is to keep the stock geometry of the forks and steering. If you don't lower the bike evenly, it will turn and handle slightly differently. However, it is a very slight difference in most cases, especially if you will only have a 1/2 in difference. I know many people, including myself, that have left the front height stock and lowered the rear over 3 inches (on my V-Star) with no problems. I noticed a slight difference in handling but nothing that even begins to bug me. IMHO I wouldn't worry about the 1/2 inch difference at all. You will probably wont even notice the difference in handling and will have no issues.

This is likely do to the new shocks having more "sag"...meaning they compress more when you sit on the bike than the stock units did.

Ideally, you should have about 3/4 of an inch of sag. The Progressives allow you to adjust the spring "preload" which is how you are supposed to adjust the shocks sag. (The stock units had NO preload adjustment, other than adding air...which is not really the same thing here)

If you google "adjusting sag" you should find more info on this...but bascily you measure the height of the top of the rear shock with you off the bike, and then with you on the bike.

The same concept also applies to the front suspension, but is more important on dirt bikes and sport bikes...

Installed the fork lowering kit today. Went with a drop of 1" and replaced the seals and oil while I was at it. The overall drop in seat height is 4" from where I started. ( 31" with the saddleman explorer and Me880's, to 27") It feels like the bike is kicked up a little in the front, but I kinda like it. We'll see how it handles like that in the spring...... A couple things I didn't think about: The stock brake lines are long now and have an ugly radius to them. I may have to re-route them or get shorter ones. Also, the side stand is probably going to have to be shortened. The bike sits nearly straight up on it now.
