New Shocks, are lengths variable?

Thinking about new shocks. Looks like stock is either 13 or 13.5. So if I was interested in a small drop in the back, would it be safe to go 12.5 or 12 inch?

Anybody know of a problem with this thinking?

Progressive shows me which shock length is called for but also gives me some shorter and longer options. With a warning about longer but no warning about shorter. So, at his point, I'm guessing, no problems. Right?

Stock shock length is 12.5" center to center on the bolt mounting holes according to another thread I just checked.
I have no experience changing the shocks on the vn750, but think others have changed out to 11.5".
Do a search on shock length and I`m sure you will find some threads with the info you need.
