Question HELP! Bottom Allen Bolt Won't Tighten

Fellow Vulcaneers --

The oil seals, dust seals and snap rings finally came in today and I was able to finish the job. I replaced the seals, filled with fresh 15w oil and reinstalled the forks on the bike; however, I've got a PROBLEM!

The bottom allen bolt will not tighten because the inside part is spinning freely. I did add a drop of blue loctite to the allen bolt. I thought by waiting to torque the bolt until everything was reassembled with tension on the inner spring I wouldn't have this problem!?!!!

I read about inserting a small diameter wooden broom handle (tapered at one) all the way down to the bottom of the fork to keep the inside part from turning. At this point is this my best solution? The broom handle will probably disperse some oil. To get an accurate oil level I will probably need to drain all the oil and then add fresh oil.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

I wish this had gone as well as the spline lube! If I have to go in there a second time I will definitely take pics and do a write-up.

Lance gave me a couple of ideas over the phone. I hope one of them works!

You could try bumping the screw with a 3/8 drive impact. It may turn it fast enough that the rod inside will not turn with it. Then check the torque on it. Be careful not to strip it.

UPDATE:

I want to give Lance a public kudo! This man rocks!

He has in-depth knowledge of all the moto systems and thinks out of the box!
Just as important, he goes the extra mile to share his knowledge and help!!!!

I followed his suggestions given via telephone to tighten the bottom allen bolt: (He's helped me overcome a crisis via telephone on several other occasions!)

* compress the forks with tie-down straps
* use heat to disolve the loctite applied the previous night
* use an allen socket on my rachet to quickly turn the bolt
* final tighten with torque wrench

IT WORKED!!!

Even though I spent a few well-invested $ on tools, heat gun, etc. it's still MUCH cheaper than 2 or 3 hours labor at Ma Kawi's $80/hour rate!!!

I will second that I had a strange problem with my oil light coming up
