Do you have a 170 on the rear? Questions

For those of you that have a 170 on the rear...

How much clearance between tire and swingarm?

Did you attach the rear drive to the wheel before mounting to the bike?

Does the fender rub on the tire if bottomed out?

Did gas mileage go down?

Is it worth it? (The extra cost)

My bike came with one and whoever put it on cut the center support off from between the center stand legs. My guess was for clearance, but I don't know for sure.

My swing arm clearance was very slim; half inch maybe.

Getting the wheel in and out was either in two steps involving the drive unit like the Clymers spells out, or letting the air out of the tire.

It never bumped/rubbed my fender.

I didn't notice much difference in gas mileage or anything else between it and the 150 I replaced it with, though I never paid much attention to those things at that time either.

Worth it? I don't know. I'll leave that for others.....

I have the 170 in rear. love it. For one I put on Metzelers which have better handling anyhow, but it feels like it wants to lean into the corners much easier. I think it corrects the speedo slightly, so mileage doesn't really go down, its just more accurate. Not sure what you mean by "Did you attach the rear drive to the wheel before mounting to the bike?"

Your gas mileage does not go down (as far as I can tell, it goes up slightly). Your RPMs at speed go down. I.e., whatever highway speed you get at 5k rpms, you'll get the same speed at 4.5k rpms.

I took off the final drive and fitted it to the wheel before mounting both to the drive shaft. It's easier to get the whole thing in there instead of trying to fit the tire to the final drive while it's still attached. It's only 4 bolts.

You may as well lube the splines while you're in there.

speedo is measured off the front tire so no matter what the rear is speedo doesn't change, the 110 90 19 in the front fixes the slight speedo inaccuracy...

Yeah this one I go around on with people. I know the speedo is measured by the front. But when you change the diameter of the rear tire, it is a kin to changeing the rear sproket on a chain drive. Its like changing gearing. So it changes the actual speed you are going.

I also run the 170 on my ride, no rubbing issues with the fender (even with lowering shocks) but I was getting rub from the center stand so I just took a large rubber stopper, drilled a hole through the middle and zip-tied it to the bottem of the swing arm to lower the stand enough to clear the tire.

Clearance of the swing arm is minimal but enough that theres no issues.

As for mounting the tire I leave the final drive in place and use a floor jack to raise the rear of the bike a little, doesnt take much, and slide the tire in from the rear.

As for being worth it (the extra cost) it was the same price as the stock 150, I went with the Kenda Cruz I am thinking the price was about $52. So yes, well worth it...LOL

Well you can go around with me on it since I have the 170 on the rear and the 100 on the front. I have the tour fender so I can't run the 110 on the front.
Consequently my rpms are down because of the "gearing" change on the rear but my speedo is still off.
With a 110 on the front I'd have (fairly) accurate speedo (5-10% correction) and lower rpms with the 170 (running 4.5k vs 5k rpms at speed)

Well since I put the 170 on the back, and I didn't change the front to the 110 cuz I wa stupid. I have had a more accurate speedo. taken some rides with the GPS and went through the speed traps. Now I said it is more accurate and slightly more accurate. It is not totally accurate. Whereas before I was 5mph now I am 2.5 to 3 mph off.
