Shifting issues

Hi everyone. I just picked up a vn800 on trade that had been sitting for a long time due to some very minor issues I was able to fix with just some know how. I had to clean and repair the carb. They had the fuel line set to prime and the throttle set to high. Got everything set correctly and it runs great. When I first went to ride it I couldn't get it out of neutral. I walked it up the drive way a few times trying to shift it and it finally went into gear. Ride it for a mile or two and brought it back and parked it til I can get and oil change and tags. Changed the oil today and went to ride it. It was no longer in neutral in won't shift. This is my first bike so I am learning as I go using mainly YouTube but can't figure this one out. Any help would be appreciated.

this forum is based on the 700/750 Vulcan and you probably won't find much information here

Just because it says "Vulcan" doesn't mean they are mechanically the same.
But for most bikes, if the shift lever is not loose or somehow disconnected from the transmission, failure to shift would likely be a broken or bent shifter fork.

How did he act? He had a problem. He wanted to ride his new bike. He is probably bummed that he can't. I know how he feels. I drove a fookin car to work.
