front gear case leak

Was given this bike and have developed a problem that I need advice on. On the l/h side of the bike are 2 chrome dust caps down low, the rear one covers the swing arm and the front one looks like the front drive gear case. The dust cap blew off and oil poured out. Looking inside with a flashlight revels an O-ring that is out of round and wrinkly, so I'm assuming that's where the oil is getting by. No bike shops in my area will touch a 1985 Vulcan VN750. Is this leak a common problem or am I up a creek without the proverbial paddle? No shops know where I can get parts and they couldn't care less anyway.

Any advice will be most gratefully received.

Not the first to have one of them liberate themselves from the bike.

Also an 85 is a vn700, not 750. Only difference is the 50 c.c. difference in engine size..99.9995 of the parts are the same.

2005 VN750

I've seen the complete cap assembly on ebay from time to time.

There was a post where the owner got a can of tuna or soup and used the can to plug the hole (he was on the road).

Thanks guys. As it turns out on further inspection its engine oil blowing out from this cap, so its engine seals. Done & done.

It's not done, you just need one of these: NOS Kawsaki Front Bevel Gear Cap 1986-2006 VN750 1996-1997 ZL600 11012-1672

Also saw complete bevel gear case for $18.
