Help me figure this out.

Earlier this week on my ride home I was on the interstate, going about 65 in 5th when all of a sudden it felt like it jumped into neutral so I pulled in the clutch and got off the road, after getting it into neutral whenever I put it into gear it would bog down and kill the engine if I didn't pull the clutch again

I trailered it home and drained the oil, I checked? the pawl spring and it seems to be okay, my main suspicion and fear is that it is the splines, the PO never lubed them and when I checked when I replaced the rear wheel they were bone dry.

I shot a quick video after I checked the spring and put it back together: https://youtu.be/PXICYgqBIcQ

Any ideas what it might be?

It is a '04 with around 26k miles on it.

Ouch. That noise once you got it into gear ... splines is the most likely culprit.
Don't now why the engine would bog though. Seems like it would still either turn the wheel or happily chew up the remnants of the splines.

We don't need a running video. Just take the wheel off and check the splines. Check both the final drive and the bevel gear. It would have been faster to check than to ask us, to be honest.

If it's in neutral you often have to 'rock the bike' to get it to change gears when it's off, similar to what you did. Nothing to worry about there.

If it's not the splines, report back with that video.

I would like to see a video.there is something more going on then splines.worn splines WOULD NOT make the motor bog down.it should rev up like the clutch is slipping and not move or move slowly.I also don't remember my one differential making noise with bad splines when the wheel was spun.I suppose it could be slipping on the splines making that noise but I think something is binding

We are here to help.maybe if one of us here knew something to help him,it would be quicker to ask one of us for insight than to jump in over his head without assistance. we are here to help the newbies get and keep these bikes running, not to make ourselves appear superior in our vast knowledge of these machines.

Not the splines as doc says. I lost my primary pulley which would be the same as the VN splines and you would be able to normally click into all gears and just not go anywhere. Wouldn't stall.
