Confused stalling

Well I just completed my first major job on my bike, I felt it went very well. I just did a spline job (will post pics of my spline in the other thread when I uplaod them) and the wheel spins freely. When I start it and put it in first the back wheel starts to turn; that should happen since I still have it in the air im presuming. But now is when im confused, it is stalling when I barely release the clutch. That shouldnt happen should it? Please help
