Transmission issues? Help!

My current 2002 Kawasaki vn 750 is having issues now though so I'm looking for input. Basically, I was going about 80 on the freeway and my throttle instantly had a disconnect with the drive shaft. I had to pull over to the side of the freeway. The bike still runs and sounds great and shifts through all gears but when I put it in first and slowly let out the clutch nothing happens except for a horrible whirring sound so I immediately let go of the clutch. Any ideas what's going on with it? Additional helpful input, I bought the bike back in February of this year when it only had 2900 miles on it, it now has about 8000. I had the oil changed when I bought it and at 5500 miles. Thanks for your time. I'm still learning about the mechanics of a bike so excuse any lack of knowledge!

Sadly yes, sounds like the inevitable unlubed splines from the factory :-(

I also have a 2002 and found unlubed splines but caught it early enough that they still engage.

See the sticky in this section on spline lube procedure for what didnt happen. The splines thay have that in and out motion are far more susceptible to wear without the moly.

The whole touted "zero maintenance" thing of our of bikes drivetrain being no belt or chain sounds great ..except when the factory skipped an important step and 2 previous owners never checked.

The low mileage when you got it makes it all the more frustrating

Well so far you have posted this same problem under three different headings and gotten the same initial answer each time (check the splines). In the interest of saving you the trouble of having to retype your conditions again for a fourth time please tell me what answer you really want and I will post that so you can finally accept what you really want and ignore our experience and wisdom. Just trying to help save time.

but having to face the fact that this is a lifetime routine
going forward. Five operations done and it still continues.
