I have a 2003 VN750. I have forward controls on it and while out riding the shifter came apart and hit the road while crusing about 60 well i pulled over shut the bike off and started looking around for the bolt and bushings that went missing could find them so only being like 3 miles from the house i just put put back in first gear. well it down shifted from 5th to 1st no problem at all no bind nothing hard with it at all. When i got back home i put my stock shifter back on and all it does is goes from 1st to neatural and back to 1st is all i can do it will not go into 2nd at all can anyone please help us out

1st,Is it running when you try to shift into second? I'm asking cause it won't shift into second unless its rolling at a certain speed.

2nd.ls the shifter hitting on something not letting it shift up?if that is the case just pull it off and move it a few splines

Someone FAR more experienced and knowledgeable will answer very shortly I am sure.

Was it hard to put into 2nd and higher gears or even after the incident by chance? Are you using more foot pressure now to get into first relative to when you first got the bike? Reason I asked is I could not get my bike into 2nd right before I experienced shift rod failure and the excessive force of my foot finally did it in. Hopefully your issue is something different.

I am sure someone will have some have good tips [EDIT: just like above for something simpler :-)]. If not, you can remove the trans cover, the one with the oil level sight glass to see the pawl and shiftdrum end to see how engagement is, the Positive Neutral Finder would prevent you from moving into 2nd unless you fool it though.

double check that the stock shifter isnt hitting the frame or something.. clearances there are kinda tight, and its easy to put it on a spline or 2 off. that will keep it from shifting into higher gears

I thought that little rod inside required a complete engine teardown to replace?
