Shifting problems 2002 750 Vulcan

Change oil to synthetic 10 W 40- 2 qts add 2 ozs of STP and 1 oz of sea foam. Drove bike for 3 days. Was smooth as greased ****. pulled up to a red light. from netrual and would,nt shift down to 1st. Pushed bike off road. put on center stand. moved shifter up and down, was able to hit 2nd gear, drove it home in 2nd gear about 1 mile. once home put on center stand. the rod coming to shifter was loose moving 1 inch in and out from case. found sweet spot and it engaged in all gears. drove it around block. Got home. Put it on center stand. took off shifter lever. used a 1 inch Shim sleve to hold the Shifter out, so it would stay secure. replaced shifter pedal, Nothing wont shift. seems to have spring tension to keep it in neutral. with motor running, if I manually spin back wheel it will engage in 2nd,3rd and 4th back down to 3rd 2nd but not 1st. Took the shim out and ROD GOING INTO CASE SEEMS TO MOVE MORE DISTANCE IN. wHEN i DRAINED THE OLD OIL THERE WERE METAL PARTICALS ON OIL SCREEN, LIKE MORE THAN THERE SHOULD HAVE BEEN.aFTER LOOKING AT EVERY FORUM POST ON TRANSMISSIONS, GEAR BOXES, SHIFTER LINKAGES. i,D SAY THERE MIGHT BE A WORN OUT pAW. 1 OF THE 3 STEAL BALLS FELL OUT. there,s metal IN A SLOT THAT MOVES THE CAM or the spring is broke. All I do know is the bike has 48000 miles on it. so I got ****ed buying it for $1200 even Know I drove it all summer with no problems.other than the cam tentioners rattle like hell. Not into paying a garage $80 / hour to split motor and fix. Looking for VN750 Member to help me fix it. Will trade/ bater, with cash, beer. food, I have a new Honda 2300 psi power washer or a 800 Watt AC/DC Honda generator to barter for labor.Do have $$ to buy needed parts. Everything else on the bike is great. 120 psi on all cyclinders, new plugs, new air filters, new battery, good tires, cost me $333 to regester and plate it 3 weeks ago. Good winter project. glengreen Bedford TX

Need to find newrider in Tx., is he still a Mod here?

A couple of ideas..

Your shift shaft slid inward, which screws up the shifts, also may have caused the shavings, but so could clacking cam chain tensioners.

Some people have used a rubber hose to shim the shaft into the sweet spot, because there is a sweet spot. Two thin metal washers, 6" apart, normally hold this sweet spot, but they are behind the stator cover.

Just in case: Kawasaki has PNF - Positive Neutral Finder - Kaw will not shift above 1st and neut, unless the back wheel is moving above a certain speed, say 10-15 mph.

for anyone following this post if you have lateral play in your shift shaft you need to fix it some how because the oil pump chain guide is held in place by the shift shaft and if the shaft is sliding in and out it can allow the oil pump chain to slip off the guide if the chain jumps off then you will not have lubrication to the upper engine and we all know how important proper lubrication is it is never good when you throw a rod in a dry hole
