final drive problem

Hi guys. I have an 85 VN 750. Yesterday I went for a ride and when I got home I notice a trail of oil behind me. When I got off the bike I saw the cap/cover, not sure what it`s called, from the final drive gearbox was gone and oil was running out. Im not a mechanic but I assume by looking at it that maybe the seal located behind the now exposed nut and bearing went out causing the oil to push the cap off since the cap/cover looks like it is only pressed on. Any ideas on what happened, what needs to be fixed and what the parts I need are? Any help would be much appreciated. You can email me @ [email protected] and I can send pics so you know exactly what im talking about.

I think you're talking about the cap on the bevel gear. The final drive is what mounts to the rear wheel.

It's the gear case, final drive case, etc.

From what I saw with my bike apart, oil is pumped in and forced through the bearings back into the engine. Maybe your cap was just loose. I had to buy a new one for me, since mine was leaking

I just ordered a new bevel cap today from 2 wheel pros for 31.00 with shipping. Thanx for the info Crowley. You mentioned oil is pumped through the bearing and then back to the engine, so was that engine oil that spilled out or gear oil from the gear box? The oil level looks the same as id did before the cap came off.

That would be motor oil at the bevel gear case.

Thanx for the help but I have one more question, hopefully lol. What is the next step after Iput the new cap on? Unsure if the oil that came out was the same that runs through the engine or if the case holds it own oil separate?

I saw online that the gear case takes 150 ml of 90 w, put that in and I'm good to go? Also I saw an Allen head on the case, is that where I put the oil?

the final drive (at rear wheel) takes 90w, and that's about right amount.

there is a large headed bolt to remove, fill thru that until its at bottom of that hole. plug bolt back in, done.
