rearset issue

I finally got vn out as we are having early warmth. Shifting up and down is fine 2 -5 but the lever drops too far into 1st and takes several lifts to get to 2nd. If you recall my earlier post last year w reversed lever before building resets it worked fine. I'm wondering if it could be in the neutral finder setup. Any thoughts? GJ

if there is no excessive play in the shifter mechanism, it sounds like the positive neutral finder is sticky..

also, remember you must be moving (for mine, its a min of 12-15 mph when warmed up, closer to 18 when cold oil is in it) before it will allow shifting to 2nd from 1st.

While I havn't had mine apart, I hear its some balls in there that are sticking. removal of them appears to remove the finder all together (but do NOT quote me on that, just what I have heard). These do live inside the transmission.

Sort of sounds like a bent pin on the shift drum. But I would need to study the setup to say for sure, haven't had one of these apart. Could be another part that's bent.

A bent pin would take some of the throw from the shifter, so it has to back up and hit the pin again, or is catching the next pin.

There have been problems with the spring clip getting out of place, back near the shift drum and forks. Forget what effect that has.

Sticky balls in the neutral finder might be cured with seafoam in the oil, but I'm not sure if that's the problem. Moving the shifter shouldn't have any effect on a sticky PNF, but more speed would.

Hee Haw-As in a good laugh

Found it. The lever shaft pivot arm is next to the clutch pivot arm. I fitted it a bit too close so they hit when the clutch was pulled in. A bit of die grinder and all works fine. Went for 35mi putt as it is still warm here.GJ

Yeah good catch! Would've been a bummer tearing it down and finding nothing wrong.

The split on the clutch arm is supposed to line up with a dot or line on the shaft.
