Ok now I'm scared

I have been reading all these posts on the final drive assembly with no oil or grease and I'm getting a little nervous. I have a little over 3,000 miles on my 2001, evrything seems fine, but I want to be sure. I'm going to put her away for the winter in a few short weeks but I want to make darn sure that I will be good to go next year. What should I loo for? Is it hard to disassembe the final drive assembly? I have a little grease on the outside of the drive hub, should I be worried about this?

Suggestions welcome

Spence

Re: Ok now I'm scared

Spence...lubing the drive splines front and rear is straightforward and relatively easy.
You are NOT going to disassemble the FD, but rather take it off the bike, and lube the attached splines, as well as the mating splines inside a collar within the drive shaft tube. Then, you will lube the front splines.
Sounds like a lot of work, and I was a bit hesitant the first time (aren't we all?? ), but it's not hard, really. I've done it twice now...
If you have a Clymers or a tech manual (CD) it's all right there. The important thing, as indicated by all these posts, is to check it.
First, remove the rear wheel, then go to the chapter on the FD removal (4 bolts) and inspection.
The front splines can be accessed by pulling the boot on the front of the driveshaft (the rearmost end) off it's mount, and brushing some moly on the splines / U joint.
With 3 grand on your 01, I would definitely check it ASAP, even tho Kaw says it can wait till 6000.

Re: Ok now I'm scared

Wow thanks for the quick response. I know I ay sound a little paranoid, but I want to have this bad boy around for years to come. I really don't have a lot of extra money lying around to dump into it so I want to make sure that I catch things BEFORE they become a poblem. I'm already dealing with a defective valve cover gasket that leaks oil on a regular basis AND I'm starting to get the coffee grinder sound

Thanks for the info.

No prob, Bud.
Starman has a pretty good description on his site...w/ some good pics of what you'll be looking at.
I could probably distill my experience for you in 15 steps or less, but no pics.
Let me know when you're ready....

Re: Ok now I'm scared

Spence, come on down this weekend, we can do it in about an hour or less. I have the grease, and may have enough mobile 1 for the back hub.

Re: Ok now I'm scared

That won't work for me. Just found out an hour ago that I am going to second shift tomorrow, through at least next week. HSI has started... But I still, at least at the moment have this Fri -> Sunday off.

Unless you are available in the morning..

But it is suppose to be a good weekend for a ride

If you are coming down on bike would you ride down on Sunday? Sunday afternoon or early evening would also work for me. (9/26/04)

Re: Ok now I'm scared

Chris, let me check to see when they want me at Lourdes, I think it's Monday. Of course I could put it in the new "travelin van" and haul it down.
