1985 Vulcan 750 19,000 miles trans shifts 1st and nuetral only

Got this Vucan recently for cheap money...$300... but it seems the shifting lever only selects 1st and the nuetral... I can't get second third etc. it goes in first fine and then nuetral but it seems nothing else...Suggestions? got a charging problem as well but I posted that to the electrical section... new here hope somebody can help

someone mentioned here earlier that if the bike is not moving or not running it will not let you go higher than the first gear

That's correct, Kawasaki has PNF, Positive Neutral Finder, 1st and neutral is all you get if the bike isn't moving fast enough or the PNF balls stick.

The bike is running and moving when you have the problem?

Is the oil clean with no signs of neglected oil changes?

Earlier years of the 750 had a smaller diameter shift rod inside with a history of breaking, but that shouldn't be the problem here.
