Installing clutch cable

I'm having issues installing my clutch cable. I have read the manual several times but I don't understand it. First off how does the leaver down near the bevel gear go on? should the gap line up with the clutch leaver pulled in or out? also the spline seems do like a quarter turn which way should it be turned before putting the leaver on? If anyone can provide with some help that will be great!

The marked line on the shaft, lines up with the gap in the lever, without pulling the clutch in.
