Shift Rod Replacement

I have looked at the threads and have found some information but I have a few questions.
First Bike is stuck in Neutral - It will not go into gear at all.
I see where it could be a spring, Pawl, or Tierod.

What parts can be replaced by just pulling off the side cover?
Do I have to get into the transmission for the tierod?

I had a repair shop pickup the bike and they seem to think it would cost more to fix it than the bike is worth.

I guess I might have to go back to my other mechanic that only charges $30.00 per hour.

Any information you can give would be appreciated.

Thanks,

What model is the bike? IIRC, it was around 91 that they changed to the heavier shift rod. Prior to that, they would eventually break.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Bike is a 1992 VN750.
I purchased it last year. It only had 5400 miles on it. Now it has 9600.
The lever returns to normal position so what I am seeing it my be the pawl or the spring.
I hope this bike has the heavier shift tierod.

Talisman,

I would say that it is the pawl spring (called a change lever spring) stuck and not returning the pawl to engage the cam (gear change drum).
Drain the oil, and look under the oil sight glass cover for this mechanism.
The engine does not need to be removed, but it will be a tight fit.

If it is the pawl or spring. It is a cheap and easy fix.

Your bike does have the heavier rod. It was changed in '91.

Thanks for the help.
I feel a lot better now.
The shop that has the bike now said it would cost more to fix than the bike is worth...
So I will try it myself or go back to my old repair shop.
