I use WD-40 on everything, and have never had any problems. I buy it by the gallon, and go through about a gallon a month. While I do agree with grease on the speedometer cable, I have used WD-40 on all other cables with no problems, I lube them about every 6 months. I have some of those stretchy covers that come on test leads to cover the alligator clips, they make ideal small funnels to stretch over the ends of the cables, fill with WD-40, wait about one minute, and it will be dripping out the other end. All the cables EXCEPT the speedometer cable on my '02 with '72,000 miles on it are original, and in great shape. I do only use one throttle cable, I removed the "decel" cable, because it doesn't do anything. It "could" be considered a safety device, but it could also cause the throttle to stick open, depending on exactly what happened. I prefer to use one cable, and hopefully if it breaks, the carb spring will close the throttle. If not, I still have the emergency kill switch under my right thumb.
I have also used LPS #2 as a cable lube, I'm sure it is better than WD-40, but about 3-4 times the price.
I am a motorcyclist, NOT a biker.
