Transmission Cover

I am/was going to replace the oil level sight glass on my pos, but when I took the cover off the side of (I think) the transmission, there doesn't seem to be a way to get it out. Do you have to remove the motor or some other parts to get it out? If so, I guess I'll just hope the super glue holds up. Of course the gasket is screwed so that may be a problem.

Frustrating. I bought a breather filter for the carbs today and plan on getting a crankcase breather filter to finish the ear shave. I'm so close to getting it running, but as always something comes up. I already ordered a sight glass and gasket but not sure how to get it in. Thanks guys for the help as always.

others will chime in I hope but a couple members said they had theirs off without engine removal or lowering, I hope so as I need to replace my gasket too. what is holding it up, can you take any pics of it and where your at on it as it may help!

What you removed was the transmission bevel case cover. The oil sight lens can only PROPERLY be accessed by removing the engine side cover. I fail to understand why so many VN riders buy new parts and then try to figure out the most half-assed way to install the parts (not a personal attack on you)! The last thing you need is to do the shade-tree fix and then have the sight cover blow 3 qts of dino fluid out while you're at 65 mph. At the very least you'll have to disassemble the bike enough to cock the engine sideways in the frame enough to remove that entire cover. Frankly, I've pulled sooo many vn700/750 motors that I find it faster to get the job done if you pull the motor completely. Just rent an automotive trans jack.... use the jack to a) lift the entire bike and set the center stand on a concrete block, then secure the front and back tires so she doesn't rock or wobble, then use the trans jack to drop and slide out the engine. I used this approach on at least a dozen bikes before I got around to building a bike lift. Be sure to use cargo straps to secure the front and rear tires the the bike doesn't walk off while you're trying to move the engine out. IT's a lot faster and easier job than most think.

BTW, the sight glass is rarely damaged on the inside, so if you're trying to replace it because it is scratched heavily and hard to see through...it can be polished. Get yourself some ordinary automotive rubbing compound, a good buffing wheel (the type that has stitching to hold it together, not a buff wheel that is loose) and go to it with an electric drill. Keep the buff wheel moving side to side so you don't grind a flat spot and it should take you about 2 minutes of polishing. Pull the clutch actuating rod off the bevel case first so you don't grind into the clutch cable. 15 minutes start to finish!

Thanks for the info. I was trying to replace it because it's cracked. A little oil comes out with it just sitting there, so I'm sure it would leak pretty bad when it's running. I guess the worst part about trying to pull the motor is that pretty much every bolt i have taken out of this bike has snapped. If I pull the motor, I will end up spending more money to try to get it back in, I just know it. I guess I'll read up on pulling the motor, but I have a feeling if I go that road, this bike will become a permanent pile of parts.
