At downshift, feels like clutch isn't disengaging all the way.

Hi all. While tooling around my neighborhood, I noticed that when downshifting with the clutch pulled in all the way, I could feel the individual gears and the engine did rev up a couple notches. It seems like the clutch isn't disengaging completely. Is this a clutch adjustment fix or the rumblings of something to come seeing as I am very much a noob to bikes. I have a Haynes here but nothing stating what I'm experiencing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated by the wise ones..

You don`t have a signature with any info on the bike, such as how old it is, or how many miles are on it, so this is just guess work on my part.

It sounds like it could be one of two things to me.

1. -The clutch cable has too much freeplay, and needs adjustment. (2 or 3 mm freeplay IIRC. It should be in your service manual.)

2. -Or the cable could be stretched beyond the limits for adjusting and you need to replace it.
