You will be fine. When finished, you'll say "That was easy" and wonder why nerves got in the way.
Make sure you put a 2X4 under centerstand so the rear drops low enough to remove axle pin. Note: Both brake assembly and rear drive assembly will want to fall apart when you remove the wheel....no biggy, just be aware.

Don't overpak the spline ..just put the required amount on. You will blow the oring if you put double the amount like i did.

While you have the rear wheel off, take a look at the brake and make sure everthing is free and moving smoothly. Especially note the actuating cam at the top, to clean and lube it if necessary.

Check brake shoes for any contamination too. Not usually a problem unless you have already noticed poor braking, but aerosol brake cleaner will usually clean them up pretty good, if needed.

They did a pretty good job with the photos. Just eyeballing them it looks to me like the splines on the final drive are miraculously in decent shape, but definitely your coupling is shot. How the coupling took such a beating and your shaft on the final drive still has most if its teeth is beyond me. But I think you might get lots of "lubed" years out of it with a replacement coupling. I'd probably refrain from doing really hard take off's in the future, just to be sure though.

You're absolutely right about not taking this lightly and putting it off. Many of us have been preaching this on here for years. I would probably open a new thread with an appropriate name, warning of the infamous dry splines, and post the same photo links there.

By the way, I can see the pile of red rust dust on the ground under the rear in the first photo. Brings back some bad memories for me!

Good job on the writeup and pics FL. Glad you caught the splines before the the final drive was wore out too. Hope you can get a coupler or driveshaft assembly for a reasonable price from somebody here or off Ebay.

Did you have a chance to check the brake mechanism yet? Is the actuating cam seized or gummed up?
