Drive Shaft Leak!

Hey guys not going to say I’m the most informed on these bikes but I have a suspicion that my rear is ruined. This all started when I parked it in a friends garage for a extended period of time. It dropped a few drops of oil right where the Shaft meets the Rear (with 4 securing bolts). Now I originally thought that this was no problem, but I got talking to my neighbor who’s an avid cyclist and he said that’s a dry connection. I took a look in my clymer book of wonders... and to my knowledge I think it is supposed to be dry, because there is no talk of a gasket or seal in the book. Any help would be great.

Sincerely,
Michael Ranalli

It is dry there, but if the seal on the input shaft of the rear gear fails, it's going to be wet. It's the splined shaft where the driveshaft coupler connects to the rear gear.

Shouldn't be a big job if the seal will come out without disassembling the rear gearset. It could be a sealed bearing instead of a seal there, but I haven't looked at it for a few years.

Excellent time to lube the splines with moly. If someone used a light oil to lube the splines, you'd probably get a drip there too.

See if this link works, "final drive" is the proper term for the rear gearset.

https://www.ronayers.com/oemparts/a/...aft-final-gear

Part#: 92049B SEAL-OIL - 92049-1234 <---<< think this last set of numbers is the Kawi part number, which may make it easier to find on ebay if needed.

I would use an air impact to take the large nut off, and just hold the wheel side with a gloved hand or wad of rags.

There's a downloadable repair manual available which hopefully has the procedure so there's no surprises. Link is on this site somewhere, several have it in their signature.

Can you tell if the leak is motor oil or 80-90w gear oil?

Just got to thinking of the outside chance the bevel gear seal might leak and let motor oil run to the back along the driveshaft.

Is the engine using oil?

Not even sure this can happen, but it's a thought. I'm pretty sure the swingarm is on a downward angle from front to rear. Bevel gear is at the front of the driveshaft.
