popping sound

i have a 99 VN 750, my bike seems to pop or misfire when i rev the engine and when i down shift ( usually first and second gear). what should i do and how do i fix it? i think its due to a lean fuel mixture but i do not know how to adjust it. thanks, tim

Welcome to the forum fiendclub, I think? lol Your location of "katy" is a bit vague, but I assume you have a US bike with all the anti-pollution hardware and hoses installed. It sounds like you are getting the popping on deceleration, where you have more unburned fuel dumped into the exhaust. The reed valves open to admit air to complete the combustion in the exhaust manifold, coming right off the cylinder head, and into the pre-muffler chamber, (often refered to here as the goats belly), which causes the popping sounds you are experiencing. Many here have greatly reduced the problem by plugging 2 vent hoses with an ordinary marble. If you check the Vulcan Verses under the exhaust section, read the thread on reducing popping, there is a more complete description of the process.

By the way there is a Newbie checkin forum where you can tell us a little about your self and your scoot, mods, etc. If you indicate where you live, you may be close to another member of the forum who can help out or be a riding buddy. Good luck in quieting the Vulcan down, and come back soon.
