Unhappy Can't seem to get the carbs right

My 94 has been popping on decel since I got it. After degoating I marbled and blocked the rear carb vac line. This helped a little. Today I removed the lead covers and began adjusting the mix screws. I started at 2.5 turns which made the bike idle and run noticeably smoother but actually made the popping worse and I even had a few backfires. I worked my way up to 3.125 turns before stopping for fear of going much farther. At 3.125 I feel like I'm slightly better than where I started (but of course this is a subjective measurement). I did my best to check for leaks and tightened everything in the system, from the carb boots to all the exhaust fittings. Anyone have any advice?

EDIT: After a more intensive inspection today while the bike was running I found several small leaks in the stock mufflers. There are several very small holes that seem to be something like spot welds that fell out or something. I can feel little puffs of exhaust coming out of them at idle. Not sure where to go from here though.
