How full is full????

Hi guys. How full do you fill your tanks?
I only ask because my miles per tank/fuel consumption is terrible!!!! I'm lucky to get 80 miles to the reserve.

Now I'm a big lad, 290lbs, and most of my riding is commuting to and from work in traffic 10 miles a day. I have done the ear shave mod, re-jetted to 142/42 and have de-goated and fitted harley mufflers........... All of which I know reduce fuel economy but 70-80 miles per tank??????

I fill up to the bottom of the collar inside the fuel filler neck.......... Can I fill up more? Am I doing myself out of a few litres of fuel?

Not overly concerned but when you see people getting 130 miles before the reserve, 70-80 miles seems very low.

Cheers guys.

Are you actually hitting reserve, or is it just indicating empty on the gauge?

I probably get about 80-90 miles to reserve on mine.. now I also am a largish person (280lbs). I have stock jetting and exhaust, but ear shaved.. I ride about 4 miles each way for work, with some occasional running around town.. all in traffic, with speeds this time of year rarely exceeding 60 mph.

I fill my tank to the bottom of the collar just as you are.. your not gonna fit much more in after you reach the collar.

Now, on the occasion I can get out and ride for some distance, my mileage goes up to 100+ before reserve. its all about getting the mass (bike and rider) moving.. takes a lot to get us larger guys going.

@ celebs: That's when the gauge is showing in the red. I haven't had the courage to push it and see how much more I will get out of the tank, I don't wanna end up running out completely.

@ oledirtydoc: Yeah that's kind of a compromise, I've tried 140/40 and she runs best with 142/42. I could probably get away with 140/42 but any lower on the slow jet and I'm back into the "lean popping" zone. I do understand that start stop riding is hell on fuel consumption but I didn't think it would be that bad.

@ michiganteddybear: Your riding sounds extremely similar to mine........ Are you sure we don't take the same route???? Hahaha. If that's the mileage you're getting then maybe I don't have a mechanical fuel economy problem as much as a situational fuel economy problem. Time to fond a new job somewhere out the motorway!!! Hahaha Cheers guys.

So how much gas are you putting into the tank? About 2.5 gallons?

if it goes vroom or boom, I LIKE IT!
